AtoB@C Shipping has been diligently preparing for upcoming regulations, specifically the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and EU emission trading. While our vessels are currently exempt from these initiatives due to their size falling below the 5,000 gross ton threshold, we have taken the initiative to establish an internal reporting system that calculates emissions and the CII-rating for each individual vessel.
The CII-rating serves as a measure of a ship's efficiency in transporting goods by evaluating the grams of CO2 emitted per cargo capacity and nautical mile. Each vessel is assigned a rating ranging from A to E, with a C-level rating being the minimum requirement for all ships.
Presently, our calculations do not account for the time spent sailing in ice conditions, which means that the current ratings do not provide a comprehensive picture of a vessel’s performance. However, in the upcoming 2023-2024 winter season, our vessels will begin collecting data related to time sailed in ice conditions. This data will significantly enhance the quality and reliability of the CII ratings for our vessels moving forward.
Starting from 2023, all our vessels must adhere to a specific threshold of CO2-emissions per cargo capacity. The Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) is a theoretical value that measures a vessel's CO2 emissions per transport work based on its design parameters, such as size and service speed. This index is comparable to the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships. The calculated EEXI is then compared to the reference line established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and vessels that fall below this reference line are considered compliant. For vessels that do not meet the standard level, measures to enhance fuel efficiency, such as engine output restrictions and additional energy-saving devices, will be required.
To ensure transparency and help our stakeholders stay informed, we offer our contract customers access to the customer portal, which provides an easy way for customers to understand the carbon footprint of their shipments. In the portal, customers can track their emissions and cargo volumes, all in one place. Data can be exported for further analysis, too.
We have compiled comprehensive information regarding these forthcoming regulations on our website, and our knowledgeable team is more than happy to address any further inquiries you may have.
